The deadline for responses is 5.00pm Friday 15 February 2013.

Transport has been much in the news recently. From November to January the South West suffered severe flooding which caused major disruptions to our rail and road networks. The Government announced the extension of the High Speed Rail Network programme to the North West and North East. However, no such modernisation of the rail network is planned for the South West.

While the Government’s commitment to investment in transport infrastructure is welcomed, South West Chambers of Commerce (SWCC)* believes that the South West is not getting its fair share of that investment.

Recently published statistics by HM Treasury** show that the average public sector spend per head in the South West for transport in 2010/11 was £212. This was the lowest figure in the country and is just over 25% of that spent per head in London, which amounted to £774 in the same period.

SWCC do not believe this is right and has decided that its top priority is to lobby for improved investment levels in the South West transport infrastructure. We will do this in conjunction with our partners such as the Local Enterprise Partnerships, British Chambers of Commerce, other business representative organisations, local authorities and our MPs.

How you can help lobby for improved investment in South West transport infrastructure

We first need evidence from businesses in the South West as to the extent of the difficulties caused by the lack of investment in our transport infrastructure. We have therefore designed an online survey which we would like you to complete. It contains 25 multiple choice questions and takes about 10 minutes to answer. We would also like you to forward this email on to your contacts so we can obtain the largest possible response from businesses in the South West, regardless of whether or not they are Chamber members.

We shall publish the results of the survey in late February and use these to help direct our lobbying activity. The results will not name any individual businesses, showing just the overall response levels for each issue addressed by the questionnaire.

Don’t forget to pass this on to your colleagues in other businesses so we can obtain their views as well!

Thank you very much for your attention and hopefully for completing the questionnaire. Look out for the results of the survey and our follow up activity in late February.
